Sixth Annual Emerging and Established African Researchers Training Academy (2025/2026)

On behalf of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and our esteemed partners, we are delighted to welcome you to the 6th Annual Emerging and Established African Researchers Training Academy.

This free virtual initiative represents a collaborative effort between the HSRC, University of Pretoria, University of Zululand, Sol Plaatje University, bringing together a wealth of expertise to support you on your academic research journey.

Registration for the Academy is now open. Before registering, please go through the Academy Programme below so that you can indicate which sessions you are interested in joining. Remember that from Day 2 onwards there are multiple tracks each day, and you will need to choose which session to attend. To help you, the Academy Programme includes details on the sessions, speakers, topics, and links to all tracks.

Why You Should Attend The Academy

Participation in the Academy offers a unique opportunity to develop critical research skills, including research design, data analysis, and academic writing. It also provides a platform to engage with like-minded peers and learn from experienced mentors, fostering meaningful collaborations that have the potential to shape the future of research across Africa.

The virtual Academy will be held over five days, with the first day comprising key modules that all participants are expected to attend. Days 2 to 5 will have two to three parallel tracks to allow participants to select specific modules in which they would like more in-depth training. You can stay in one track per day or move between tracks. The links to each track will be available in the Academy Programme. Please join the correct track for your selected session.

Academy sessions will start at 08h30 daily and conclude at 16h00. There will be a lunch break (1 hour) as well as two tea breaks (around 30 minutes) per day.

  1. Registration & Participation

    How do I register for the academy?
    Register through this link. Fill out the form and submit it. You will receive a confirmation email.

    Who can participate?
    The Academy welcomes emerging and established African scholars, including MA and PhD trainees, post-Docs, and lecturers from higher education institutions, science councils, and other public and private institutions.

    What are the IT requirements?
    You simply need a laptop or desktop computer, stable internet connection, and sufficient data for the online participation. The academy will be conducted on Zoom and links to each track will be provided prior to the session.

    Do I need a Zoom license to participate?
    You do not need a Zoom license to attend Zoom sessions. Participation is free, and a license is only required for hosting with advanced features.

    When is the closing date for registration?
    Secure your spot by 21 July 2025, to ensure you receive all pre session materials and access information.
  2. Event Details

    What are the dates and times for the academy?
    The Academy will take place from 28th July to 1st August 2025, from 08h30 to 16h00 daily. Details are outlined in the programme.

    Will I receive a certificate of attendance?
    Yes, all participants will receive a certificate of attendance to acknowledge their commitment to research excellence.
  3. Preparation before the Sessions

    How should I prepare for the sessions?
    Some modules may have pre-training activities such as background reading materials or completing a short exercise. Lesson plans will be provided by the trainers for each module which detail what you need to prepare. If a module requires you to use specific software, please ensure that you have downloaded the free version of the software, like STATA or SPSS, prior to the sessions.

    Will there be any pre-session reading materials?
    For some modules, pre-session reading materials and exercises may be shared with registered participants in the repository. Look in the repository for this information.
  4. During the Academy

    Date and time for each module
    Refer to the Academy Programme for the details. Ensure that you log in to each session at least 10 minutes before it starts.

    Where do I find the link to my session?
    Session links are available in the Academy Programme and Academy Prospectus.

    How do I join a breakout room on Zoom?
    During the session, the host will assign you to a breakout room. You will receive a prompt on your screen to join the breakout room. Click “Join” to enter the room, and you will join automatically.

    I can’t hear the presenter. What should I do?
    Check your audio settings in Zoom. Ensure your speakers are on and the volume is up. If the issue persists, try leaving the meeting and rejoining. If you still have issues, contact our technical support team at academyqueries@hsrc.ac.za.

    How do I ask questions during the sessions?
    You can use the chat feature on Zoom to type your questions or raise your hand virtually to ask questions directly during Q&A sessions. The Chair and the Trainer will indicate at the start how they wish to deal with questions during the session. Some may want to allocate designated times for questions, while others may allow questions during the session. Try and use the chat function to avoid too much disruption during the session.

    Can I get a recording of the session?
    Yes, session recordings will be made available after the event. Links to the recordings will be found in the repository in the folder relevant to the specific module.

    How do I provide feedback for a session?
    After each session, an evaluation feedback form will be shared as a link in the chat and via email. Please complete it to help us improve future events.

    Will there be any networking opportunities?
    Yes, there will be networking features that allow you to connect with other attendees, presenters, and organizers.

    What should I do if I miss a session?
    If you miss a session, you can watch the recording, which will be available in the repository

    How do I get a copy of the presentations?
    All presentations will be uploaded to the academy repository within a day of the training being held.
