Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

As voting continues following South Africa’s national elections on 29 May 2024, the HSRC’s Prof Joleen Steyn Kotze spoke to SABC News live at the Results Operations Centre at Gallagher Convention Centre. So far, the results are unprecedented, with the success of new parties being particularly shocking.

Shocking as it is, Kotze shares that historically the data tells us that the introduction of a new political player inevitably results in it making the the top three of the national ballot, which we saw with COPE in 2009, and the EFF in 2014.
