Virtual Community of Practice: Policy discussion on homelessness in South Africa

29 July 2024
10:00 am - 12:30 pm

The Department of Social Development commissioned the Human Sciences Research Council to develop a green paper on homelessness in South Africa.

As part of this process, three provincial community of practice (CoP) workshops were held in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Western Cape with different stakeholders including government representatives, civil society, academics, and persons with lived experience of homelessness.  CoP members had the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences on issues pertaining to homelessness framed around:

  1. how homelessness should be defined in the national policy,
  2. strategies to promote a collective response to homelessness,
  3. identifying potential indicators for a successful policy, and
  4. roles, responsibilities and resources for successful policy implementation.

To capture the input of those who were unable to attend these in-person sessions, we are hosting a virtual CoP workshop. This workshop is open to all stakeholders who are invested in addressing homelessness and improving the lives of persons who experience homelessness in South Africa.
