The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) launched the latest volume in the State of the Nation series, titled Quality of Life and Wellbeing. The launch took place at the CSIR Convention Centre on Tuesday, 14 May 2024, from 15:30.

The event featured keynote addresses by Prof Laetitia Rispel and Dr Cassius Lubisi, followed by a panel discussion with esteemed experts in social sciences and humanities, including Prof Irma Eloff and two of the editors, Prof Narnia Bohler-Muller and Prof Crain Soudien. The discussion was facilitated by seasoned journalist and news editor, Ferial Haffajee.

Edited by Professors Vasu Reddy, Narnia Bohler-Muller, Zitha Mokomane and Crain Soudien, the book is a timely reflection on the state of the nation, offering a nuanced and multidisciplinary analysis of the complex interdependence between South Africa’s socioeconomic and political contexts, and quality of life and wellbeing in the country.

The 2024 edition brings together contributions from leading scholars and experts in various fields, exploring themes such as the environment, quality of life and wellbeing; human security, gender and wellbeing; wellbeing and happiness; inequality in South Africa; and the impact of COVID-19 on quality of life.

The event was aimed at stimulating critical thinking and spark important conversations about the state of our nation and the ways in which South Africans can work towards a more equitable, healthy and just society.

Celebrating its 20th year of existence, the State of the Nation volume, which is one of the HSRC’s flagship publications, serves as an invaluable, independent scholarly resource offering insights into the current state of South Africa.
