HSRC hosted a symposium at the 8th South African TB conference

The HSRC hosted a symposium at the 8th South African TB Conference, at the Durban International Convention Centre from 4-7 June 2024.

The symposium titled, Understanding TB in South Africa: Knowledge, prevention, screening, and therapeutic thresholds, took place on 5 June 2024.

Experts discussed various aspects of TB in South Africa, including knowledge and awareness, prevention, screening, and treatment. They shared findings and insights from recent studies and projects, highlighting the need for more efforts to address gaps in the TB response to end TB in South Africa. The session also provided a platform for discussion and collaboration among stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers.

TB Testing Intensity and Declining Incidence in KwaZulu – Natal, South Africa. Presenter: Ms JN Ngozo, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health.
C-reactive protein and Computer-aided detection of tuberculosis on chest X-ray for TB screening in Lesotho and South Africa. Presenter: Dr Shannon Bosman, HSRC.
Estimating the therapeutic threshold for tuberculosis using adapted Nominal Group Technique and Clinical Vignettes. Presenter: Dr Thanda Madonsela, HSRC.
Differentiated service delivery approaches to improve IPT services. Presenter: Dr Adrienne Shapiro, University of Washington.

The 8th SA TB Conference was a premier event for TB researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices in the fight against TB. The conference was organised by the South African National TB Conference Committee and supported by various organisations, including the HSRC.

This year, the SA TB Conference was chaired by the HSRC’s Professor Sizulu Moyo (MBChB, MPH, PhD) who is a public health professional with research experience across public health disciplines.
