Thabo Mofutsanyana district hosts Rural Development Indaba

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) participated in a rural development indaba hosted by the Free State Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs. The indaba brough together local, district and provincial stakeholders to engage on policy, investment, and community action for inclusive, sustainable rural development. It took place on 26 and 27 March 2026, with Dr Kukhanyile Mali and Dr Blessing Masamha representing the HSRC.

The Indaba conversations pivoted on four themes: The Integrated Rural Development Sector Strategy (IRDSS), land reform challenges and opportunities, the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Program, and Rural Development Strategic Partnerships. Discussions encouraged inclusive participation to co-create an action-oriented plan for rural socioeconomic transformation.

The indaba served as a strategic platform to inform stakeholders across Free State about the upcoming data collection activities that the HSRC is leading. It also highlighted how the data collected from these key stakeholders was linked to improved provisioning of rural infrastructure, local economic development, and facilitating meaningful skills development.

Finally, the indaba strengthened strategic networks, stakeholder databases, and communication with district champions. It enabled integration of the IRDSS into coordinating structures like the District Development Model (DDM), supporting implementation. Progress in data collection advances the co-creation of evidence platforms, bringing the IRDSS closer to achieving its objectives outlined in its workplan.
