HSRC at the International AIDS Conference 2024
• HSRC at the International AIDS Conference 2024
The IAS 2024 conference will convene thousands of people living with, affected by and working on HIV to share knowledge, best practices and lessons learnt from the HIV response over the past 40 years, as well as from the responses to COVID-19, and other public health threats. AIDS 2024 in Munich, Germany, will provide a powerful platform to strategically align around a unified and equitable response to the pandemic.
It will signal to the world that the HIV response is united behind an evidence-based approach that puts people first. With South Africa’s burden of HIV so high (7,8 million people living with HIV in 2022), it is imperative that we share the information from our survey with the global HIV community.
The HSRC’s participation at IAS 2024
The HSRC has had a presence at the IAS conference since 2004 and we are proudly part of the delegation from South Africa representing the country.
The satellite session will bring together over 500 delegates to share the results of the latest South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM). ) SABSSM is a cross-sectional, population-based household survey designed to provide information on national and sub-national progress towards control of the HIV epidemic in South Africa.
The session will include discussants from national government, funders and key stakeholders on the global stage. We will also be screening a documentary of 20 years of the SABSSM survey series.

View and download all the all the latest SABSSM documentation, including executive summary, key findings presentation, and press release, here.
The HSRC booth will be the focal point for South African attendees. The exhibition will provide an opportunity for HSRC to share information not just about PHSB projects, but position the broader HSRC as a research organisation undertaking a broad range of research.
The HSRC delegation includes Ms Yolande Shean; Ms Sue Samuels; Mr Adziliwi Nematandani; Prof Khangelani Zuma; Dr Nomphumelelo Zungu, Prof Alastair van Heerden; Prof Edmore Marinda; Dr Sean Jooste; Dr Shandir Ramlagan; Dr Shannon Bosman; Dr Buyisile Chibi; Mr Franco Musiello; Dr Zaynab Essack; and Dr Vuyelwa Mehlomakulu.
