Inside the GEI Project – Zimbabwe
• Inside the GEI Project – ZimbabweZimbabwe is one of 13 African countries included in the Gender Equality and Inclusivity (GEI) Project. It is trying to address the inequalities in its socio-economic systems and the gender equality, inclusivity, and intersectionality (GEII) gaps in the research landscape. At present, the GEII lens is inadequately applied in research activities undertaken in the country.
Andrew Muridzi from the Research Council of Zimbabwe says they want to ensure women are included in the research ecosystem. To do this, a GEII toolkit or framework needs to be implemented. Linda Goredema from the Research Council of Zimbabwe explains the value of having a roadmap or framework to assist in developing GEII because it isn’t fully understood in the research cycle.
They plan to develop and implement a gender mainstreaming toolkit, to host workshops to roll out the toolkit, and to raise awareness of GEII issues.
The Research Council of Zimbabwe wants to help research stakeholders be “gender responsive” by following the guidelines in the GEII toolkit to mainstream gender issues in the research landscape of Zimbabwe by 2030.
They hope to see an increase in women participating in research, and they’re looking at reaching the goal of 50% equity. For Zimbabwe, failure is not an option, and they are set on achieving the goal of gender equity and inclusivity, as well as supporting other marginalised groups along the way.
