Gender Equality and Inclusivity
Reflections at the Intersections Episode 2: How Equal is Equal?
Gender Equality and Inclusivity • Reflections at the Intersections Episode 2: How Equal is Equal?Monitoring, evaluating, and learning from gender equality, inclusivity, and intersectionality projects
Research shows, overwhelmingly, that women receive a lot less research funding and grant money than men. The move to adopt a gender equality, inclusivity, and intersectionality (GEII) lens in research funding is a massive step towards social transformation in science, technology, and innovation in Africa.
However, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) remains a barrier. How do you design monitoring systems that are GEII responsive and easy to use? How do you evaluate gender components? How do you measure the success or efficacy of your work? How do you fit M&E into timelines? And how do you navigate complex technical jargon and processes?
It’s time to adopt more positive approaches and demystify M&E to make it less complex and more user-friendly.
We invite you to join an interactive online workshop on the 27th November 2024 by M&E expert and facilitator Ann-Murray Brown. The 90-minute interactive online workshop is part of the “Reflections at the Intersections” series and offers an overview of gender-responsive monitoring and evaluation approaches and principles for designing indicators and capturing impact through a GEII lens.
If you are looking for a method to develop robust ways to measure and advance GEII then this session is exactly what you’re looking for. You’ll also learn:
- What core approaches and principles to consider when incorporating a GEII lens in a monitoring and evaluation framework?
- What to consider when designing practical GEII responsive M&E indicators and data collection methods for capturing the impact of GEII projects?
This 90-minute interactive workshop is highly participatory and includes peer-to-peer learning opportunities through breakout room discussions. The session will also include translators for our French and Portuguese attendees.

The “Reflections at the Intersections” series is brought to you by the Gender Equality and Inclusivity (GEI) Project of the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), currently being implemented by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), Portia, and Jive Media Africa. The series offers fresh and challenging perspectives that aim to generate knowledge on gender, equality, inclusivity, and intersectionality (GEII) approaches. The focus is on cross-regional and cross-continental conversations on GEI in research and grantee support practices, with a strong focus on intersectionality. The series draws on the premise that research that is informed by a gender equality and inclusion lens offers the best chance we have at meeting sustainable development targets.
