External Capacity Development and Internships

The External Capacity Development & Internships unit was established to be the HSRC’s response to the plight of youth and graduate unemployment. Given the rich track record and impact of the HSRC’s research in youth unemployment, post-schooling and access into the labour market, the institution embraced evidence-based interventions that seek to build skills and capacity of South African youth. These interventions are the HSRC’s direct response to some of the societal challenges confronting the country. The HSRC took over the management and implementation of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) Internship Programme, which provides internship opportunities for unemployed graduates in the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) fields in hosting institutions in the National System of Innovation (NSI) across the country. The Programme has enhanced its offering to include strong capacity development initiatives for a holistic internship experience.
