South Africans turned out with high confidence for the 2026 Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026, overwhelmingly declaring the voting process to be free, fair, and well-managed.
According to the official 2026 Election Satisfaction Survey (ESS 2026) released by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), nine out of ten participating voters expressed strong satisfaction with electoral integrity, polling staff performance, and ballot secrecy.
Key highlights
- Electoral integrity: 90% of voters rated election procedures as free, and 91% rated them as fair.
- Faster queues: 78% of voters waited 15 minutes or less to cast their ballots; a major operational improvement from the 2024 national elections.
- Exceptional staff ratings: 95% of voters were satisfied with the service provided by IEC officials at polling stations.
- Vote secrecy and count accuracy: 95% were confident in ballot secrecy inside the voting booth, while 83% expressed high confidence in counting accuracy.
- Civic motivation: 59% voted out of a firm belief that their vote makes a real difference in their communities.
- High institutional trust: 81% of participating voters express overall trust in the Electoral Commission, and 96% plan to vote in future elections.
Operational wins: shorter wait times and accessible stations
A major takeaway from the 2026 survey is the noticeable improvement in voting station logistics. Long waiting lines dropped dramatically across all nine provinces: 91% of voters queued for 30 minutes or less, with nearly four-fifths waiting under 15 minutes. Furthermore, 90% reached their voting station within a 30-minute travel window.
Voters also gave high praise to precinct staff for helpfulness (98% favorable) and professionalism (98% favorable), while 96% found voting procedures inside the station easy to understand.
About the survey
The ESS 2026 was conducted on Election Day (4 November 2026) by the HSRC on behalf of the IEC. Researchers completed 13,198 face-to-face tablet interviews across 300 nationally representative voting stations covering urban formal, rural, and informal communities in all nine provinces.
