• The Centre for Community-Based Research (CCBR)
CCBR’s portfolio includes pioneering implementation studies such as Do PrEP, SMART ART, and BIYELA, which aim to expand access to HIV prevention, treatment and STI care through culturally appropriate, community-based approaches. Its innovative model is now being piloted beyond Sweetwaters, with initiatives like the Mentor Mothers program in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, targeting maternal and child health among high-risk groups. Two decades in, the CCBR remains committed to deepening its community impact through stakeholder-driven programmes and scalable, evidence-based interventions, reinforcing its role as a national leader in applied, community-centred health research.
At the Centre for Community-Based Research (CCBR), we believe that meaningful, lasting change in public health starts at the community level. Over the past two decades, we’ve built a strong foundation of trust, innovation, and scientific excellence in the Sweetwaters area, and we are now expanding our reach to new regions with the same commitment to real-world impact. Our work is grounded in the belief that evidence-based solutions must be both scientifically sound and contextually relevant, and our team’s multidisciplinary expertise allows us to bridge clinical research with social innovation.
We invite organisations to partner with us because we don’t just conduct research — we co-create solutions with communities. From decentralised HIV prevention strategies to maternal health interventions, our work ensures that findings are not only published, but put into action. By collaborating with CCBR, you gain a partner dedicated to shared impact, stakeholder engagement, and scalable interventions that make a tangible difference in the lives of South Africans. Together, we can build healthier, more resilient communities.
