Dr Tholang Mokhele

Manager of Geospatial Computing and Analytics

Dr Tholang Mokhele is the Manager of Geospatial Computing and Analytics Sub-unit of the eResearch Knowledge Unit at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). He holds PhD in Environmental Science (GIS) and MSc in Environmental Science (Remote Sensing) (Cum Laude) both from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is NRF Rated Researcher.


Dr Mokhele has more than 17 years of experience in geospatial analytics and data analytics in social and health sciences research. He has undertaken projects for both government and international funders such as Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Department of Human Settlements, Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, Ford Foundation, DFID, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNDP.

His areas of research interest include spatial analysis and modelling, spatial statistics, geostatistics, small area estimation, accessibility modelling, geo-computation, automated zone-design techniques, data analytics, demographics and sampling techniques. Dr Mokhele’s publication record spans the authoring and co-authoring of 70 peer–eviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, conference proceedings and policy briefs. He has presented and co-presented more than 30 papers at both local and international conferences.
