The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and our esteemed partners, are pleased to welcome you to the 7th Annual Emerging African Researchers Training Academy.
This free virtual academy brings together the collective expertise of the HSRC’s Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) Division and the Capacity Growth and Innovation (CGI) Unit, in partnership with the University of Pretoria, the University of Zululand, and Sol Plaatje University, to support participants as they advance their academic research journeys.
Seventh Annual Emerging African Researcher Training Academy
This year’s Academy explores what it means for African knowledge and scientific communication to come into their own alongside artificial intelligence.
Participation in the Academy provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen core research capabilities, including research design, data analysis, and academic writing. It also creates a space to connect with peers, engage with experienced mentors, and build meaningful collaborations that can contribute to the future of research across Africa.
The virtual Academy will take place over five days. Day 1 will include key foundational modules that all participants are expected to attend. From Days 2 to 5, the programme will offer two parallel tracks each day, allowing participants to choose the sessions most relevant to their interests and training needs. Participants may remain within one track for the day or move between tracks, depending on the modules they wish to attend. Links to each track will be provided in the Academy Programme. Please ensure that you join the correct link for your selected session.
Academy sessions will begin at 09h00 each day and end at 16h00. The daily programme will include an approximately one-hour lunch break, and two tea breaks of about 30 minutes each.

The Academy Repository serves as your central resource hub for all module materials. It includes lesson plans, presentations, trainer bio-sketches, background readings, and guidance on any required software. We encourage you to review the materials in advance to get the most out of each session, and to revisit them whenever needed to reinforce key concepts.

Who can participate?
The Academy welcomes emerging and established African scholars, including MA and PhD trainees, post-Docs, and lecturers from higher education institutions, science councils, and other public and private institutions.
What are the IT requirements?
You just need a laptop or desktop computer, stable internet connection, and sufficient data for online participation. The Academy will be conducted on Zoom and links to each track will be provided prior to the sessions.
Do I need a Zoom license to participate?
You do not need a Zoom license to attend Zoom sessions. Participation is free, and a license is only required for hosting with advanced features.

What are the dates and times for the academy?

Preparation before the Sessions
How should I prepare for the sessions?
Some modules will have pre-training activities such as background reading materials or short exercises. Lesson plans for each module detailing what you need to prepare will be provided. If a module requires you to use specific software, please ensure that you have downloaded the free version of the software, like STATA or SPSS, prior to the sessions.
Will there be any pre-session reading materials?
For some modules, pre-session reading materials and exercises may be shared with registered participants in the repository. Look in the repository for this information.
During the Academy

Refer to the Academy Programme for the details. Ensure that you log in to each session at least 10 minutes before it starts.
Where do I find the link to my session?
Session links are available in the Academy Programme and Academy Prospectus.
How do I join a breakout room on Zoom?
You will be assigned to breakout rooms by the session host. You will receive a prompt on your screen to join the breakout room. Click “Join” to enter the room, and you will join automatically.
I can’t hear the presenter. What should I do?
Check your audio settings in Zoom. Ensure your speakers are on and the volume is up. If the issue persists, try leaving the meeting and rejoining. If you still have issues, contact our technical support team at academyqueries@hsrc.ac.za.
How do I ask questions during the sessions?
You can use the chat feature on Zoom to type your questions or raise your hand virtually to ask questions directly during Q&A sessions. The Chair and the Trainer will indicate at the start how they wish to deal with questions during the session. Some may want to allocate designated times for questions, while others may allow questions during the session. Try and use the chat function to avoid too much disruption during the session.
Can I get a recording of the session?
Yes, session recordings will be made available after the event. Links to the recordings will be found in the repository in the folder relevant to the specific module.
How do I provide feedback for a session?
After each session, an evaluation feedback form will be shared as a link in the chat and via email. Please complete it to help us improve future events.
Will there be any networking opportunities?
Yes, there will be networking features that allow you to connect with other attendees, presenters, and organizers.
What should I do if I miss a session?
If you miss a session, you can watch the recording, which will be available in the repository
How do I get a copy of the presentations?
All presentations will be uploaded to the academy repository within a day of the training being held.
