Sustainable cities researchers visit Kigali, Rwanda

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

Professor Ivan Turok and Dr Andreas Scheba of the HSRC’s Economic Performance and Development research programme(EPD) spent a week in Rwanda recently as part of their research project on Sustainable, Healthy and Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods (SHLC). They undertook study visits throughout the capital city, Kigali, and a secondary city, Huye. They met the Mayors of both cities and learnt about their efforts to improve livelihoods and living conditions for ordinary people. Rwanda is experiencing one of the fastest rates of urbanisation in the world and is seeking to manage the process and enhance economic development through preparing land in advance and investing in infrastructure. They also visited the Kigali memorial to the 1994 genocide, which galvanised the pursuit of national unity and development.
