The National Survey of Research and Experimental Development Inputs (R&D Survey) delivers comprehensive statistics on R&D in South Africa. These statistics are used in the development of science policy to set government R&D priorities and funding levels, as well as for monitoring and benchmarking purposes. The survey is undertaken annually by the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) to monitor the country’s investments in research and development.
The survey tracks R&D performance in five economic sectors:
1. Business
2. Government
3. Science Councils
4. Higher Education
5. Not-for-Profit Organisations
The R&D 2020/21 survey provides the latest data on R&D expenditure and performance. It is the nineteenth wave in the series.
