R&D Report 2006/07 released

Conducted by the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII), on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST)

The Department of Department of Science and Technology commissions the Knowledge Systems research programme of the HSRC to conduct the annual Survey of National Research and Experimental Development inputs, according to the guidelines laid down in the Frascati Manual

The methodology and data provided in the 2006/07 R&D Survey report have been approved by Statistics South Africa and awarded the seal of approval by the Statistician General and thus comprise official statistics. The report also contains a Foreword by the Statistician General and a Preface by the Minister of Science and Technology.

The 2006/07 R&D Report has been approved by StatsSA and the Department for public release and can be downloaded below. Following the Frascati Manual, the Survey covers business enterprises, government, higher education institutions, not-for-profit institutions and science councils.

The 2006/07 R&D Survey reveals gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) of R16.5 billion amounts to 0.95% of GDP. That reflects a growth in this important indicator of 3.3%. The target of GERD: GDP reaching 1% by survey year 2008/09 is becoming attainable.
