THE Department of Science and Technology is working with the Treasury to figure out how to get SA back on track to reach its target of spending 1.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) on research and development (R&D) by 2019, it emerged on Wednesday.
The latest state-commissioned survey shows SA’s spending on R&D as a proportion of GDP has remained constant for three years, at 0.76%, — barely halfway towards the government’s 1.5% target, as set out it in its Medium Term Strategic Framework for 2014-19.
