It is now clear that the state’s attack on the country’s medical health problems is multi-pronged. It is possible to applaud some of the tactics while warning of the real dangers implicit in others.

South Africa is rolling out the biggest antiretroviral programme in the world.

It accounts for 21% of the global antiretroviral market, and given that an estimated 6.4-million South Africans are infected with HIV/AIDS, this is hardly surprising.
