Take the road to a healthy heart this September

If you thought that you were quite healthy – think again. The results from the first national health and nutrition survey conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) show that many South Africans are shockingly ignorant about their health.

The recently released South African National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES‐1) showed that one in ten had high blood pressure, and a further one in ten were pre‐hypertensive. Obesity and overweight has also increased over recent years, with 65% of women being overweight or obese. This makes them even more susceptible to heart disease and stroke and a range of non-communicable diseases, like diabetes and cancer.
