A NEW South African study has found that given the right support, parents who are HIV-positive will disclose their status to their children aged between six and 10 years.

Researchers said this was the first study on parental HIV disclosure intervention to show positive findings in Africa. The study at the Africa Health Research Institute in KwaZulu-Natal, has been published in the Lancet journal.

Researchers say the findings of the study had enormous potential in protecting children’s health in the long term. The study led by the Human Sciences Research Council’s Dr Tamsen Rochat found that the Amagugu intervention had the potential to increase maternal HIV disclosure to primary children aged six to ten almost tenfold.
