The viability of a minimum wage came under the spotight during the farmworkers’ strikes in the Western Cape. Its was again the subject of scrutiny this week when Newcastle clothing manufacturers took the labour minister and the National Bargaining Council for the Clothing Manufacturing Industry to court.

The firms object to having to pay the legislated minimum wage, arguing that it will put 450 firms employing 16 700 workers out of business.
