Much international relations (IR) work focuses on nation-states as its primary object and locates them within the international system of states. Since this system comprises a large number – South Sudan was recently admitted to the United Nations as its 193rd member – it is common wisdom to group states into categories that are deemed useful for IR analysis. South Africa has had more than its fair share of categorisation.
