Your last shot at getting a Pfizer vaccine – here’s how SA’s roll-out is changing come July

Just under a third of South Africa’s remaining Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer are set to expire by July. After that, any unused doses will have to be destroyed. Until then the health department is trying to increase uptake of the doses and donate spare shots.

“Community educators will also be on hand to help people to register, discuss vaccinations in their mother tongue and dispel key misinformation that may be scaring people away.”

These strategies are all based on findings of the University of Johannesburg and Human Sciences Research Council’s vaccine hesitancy survey published in February, which found that the main reasons people don’t get vaccinated in rural areas were because they didn’t know where to go (24%), vaccination sites are difficult to get to (18%) and the high cost of getting there (17%).
