SA’s first national TB prevalence survey: A bleaker picture than expected

South Africa has a far higher number of people with tuberculosis (TB) than previously thought and many of them have not been diagnosed or treated, found  the country’s first national prevalence survey.

The survey was conducted between 2017 and 2019 by the South African Medical Research Council, Human Sciences Research Council and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases on behalf of the national Health Department.
