Densification is something of a buzz word in urban planning circles – everybody knows sustainable cities have to be denser because they are more cost- and energy-efficient, and they place people and human values at the centre of urban life.
But if the rationale of a denser and richer urban life is comfortably applied to the suburbs or inner cities, the same can’t be said for some of the fastest growing and most over-crowded of our urban spaces: informal settlements.
