Climate Change and Futures in Africa Conference 2025 : Risk in Time and Space

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

From 29 October to 31 October 2025, the city of Windhoek became the heartbeat of Africa’s climate resilience movement. The Climate Change and Futures in Africa Conference brought together over a hundred delegates — scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and communities — united by one mission: to reimagine our collective response to risk in time and space.

Officially opened by the Prime Minister of Namibia, Dr Elijah Ngurare, and joined by leaders across science and innovation, the conference set a visionary tone — calling for inclusive and evidence-based climate action across Africa.

HSRC CEO, Professor Sarah Mosoetsa, reminded delegates of the power of collaboration — where research meets community, and policy meets people. Across plenaries and breakout sessions, delegates shared bold insights on climate risk, resilience, and the future of Africa’s communities. Discussions explored risk analysis, ethics, governance, and communication — linking global frameworks to local realities.

The conference amplified the role of community-based participatory research — empowering local voices to shape adaptive and ethical responses to climate challenges. From early warning systems to indigenous knowledge, the conference showcased how African innovation is driving local solutions to global problems.

HSRC’s Professor Charles Hongoro emphasised the importance of ethical governance and research collaboration in building a capable, developmental state.

From communities to policymakers, academics to activists, Windhoek 2025 was a living example of what happens when Africa unites under one shared purpose. Together, delegates mapped pathways toward a future where resilience is built not only through data, but through dialogue, equity, and trust.

The future of climate resilience in Africa lies in our ability to learn, share, and act — together.

From Windhoek to the world, the Climate Change and Futures in Africa Conference 2025 has reignited hope for a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient continent.
