Rights of marriage officers as well as gays must be protected

Your article Home Affairs refuses to marry gay couple (SD August 27) refers. Your headline is misleading. Once the article is read, it is clear that the head of the Port Elizabeth Home Affairs office did not refuse to marry the couple but stated that “the only person prepared to precide over same-sex marriages in the office was not available for the forseable future”. This might seem to be splitting hairs but it is in fact an important difference.
