It was a sunny Cape Town winter’s day, but as we sat in Linda’s shack interviewing her about her energy uses and needs, we steadily grew colder and colder. No sun filtered through the small window; there was no ceiling, just a corrugated iron roof and walls constructed from worn wooden planks offering scant protection against the elements.
