It’s time to get ready for school but what is in store for our pupils this year? Quite by chance I am privy to a vibrant conversation between two senior school teachers at my local gym.

One sits besides me on a stationary cycle, the other stops by to chat to her colleague. “I can hardly wait to take my early retirement,” says the one. “I’m simply fed up with teaching. I used to love getting up in the morning and going to school, now I dread it.”

The other concurs. “It’s these bloody reports we have to write for stupid inspectors that drive me insane. And those children with snotty noses who just look vacuously at you”
