In discussion: Katharine Frost (Ububele) and Carol Bews (Jo’burg Child Welfare)
In November 2016 PAN Children hosted the first in a series of workshops on the centrality of bonding theory and attachment in ECD programmes. Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust and Jo’Burg Child Welfare (JCW) presented two case studies of projects that have been implemented in Gauteng – Baby Mat and Granny programme. The possible replication of these approaches in other municipal and healthcare settings was explored.
On 27 November we will host the second in the series where Katharine Frost from Ububele will present on the theoretical underpinnings of the approach taken to further build up our understanding of these projects. ECD policy is progressive but there remains a gap between policy and intervention. The centrality of relationships is acknowledged but needs to be translated into practice. Carol Bews will practically demonstrate the beneficial effect of the Granny programme on babies.
This will precede the third in the series, where the outcome of an evaluation will be presented – scheduled for early 2018.
PAN Children is interested in initiatives taking place at grassroots level and is proud to host this series. This is an opportunity to find out what is going on at community level, as well as the successful partnership between JCW and Ububele. We will use this seminar series to form the basis of a topical guide on psychosocial aspects of ECD. A topical guide is a concise and credible 12-page document on a specific issue which can be used widely as a decision-support tool by government officials, practitioners and as an introduction to a field of study by students.
