This paper explores youth experiences of the ‘new South Africa’ by considering the Spoken Word poetry scene of Pretoria and Johannesburg as a movement that continues to demonstrate strong ties to Black Consciousness ideology. In exploring Gauteng’s Spoken Word poetry movement, I draw on my Master’s thesis that uses an ethnographic approach towards understanding the Spoken Word scene. Drawing on these findings as well as on interviews conducted with poets, I argue that Black South African youth experience discontentment with the ‘new’ South Africa.
