The Africa Institute for South Africa, in the Human Sciences Research Council, extends an invitation to you to participate in a Roundtable discussion focussed on understanding the Socio-Economic Impact of Liquor in Mpumalanga Province. More specifically we wish to invite you to make a brief presentation at the roundtable to facilitate stakeholder discussion on critical issues which need to be explored.

The roundtable is one of the core components of a data collection method in a research study which the HSRC has been commissioned to undertake on behalf of the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER). The specific objectives of the study as articulated by the MER are:

• To measure the socio-economic impact of the liquor industry in Mpumalanga
• To provide analysis, insights and possible interventions for alcohol harm reduction in the province.

The research study has adopted multi-mix method data gathering interventions including a household survey, focus group sessions, administrative data analysis, literature and documentary review and engagements with key stakeholders through key informant interviews and a round table session.

The aim of the roundtable session is to provide a platform for the diverse stakeholders in the sector to share valuable knowledge, insights and perspectives and to unpack the very real differences on the impact of liquor in the province. The roundtable, we hope, will also allow for a more discursive exploration of issues relating to effective interventions for alcohol harm reduction. The study has adopted a consultative and participatory approach.

Stakeholders who are being targeted for this roundtable include those across the various spheres of government, regulatory bodies, private sector institutions, research institutions, non-profit organisations and advocacy bodies. In light of your involvement and knowledge in respect of this issue you have been invited to participate.
