HSRC to release the key HIV survey findings for Gauteng

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)
Press Release

Johannesburg, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 – The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) will release the key provincial findings of the Sixth South African National HIV, Prevalence, Incidence, and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI) for Gauteng.

The comprehensive provincial results announcement, followed by a stakeholders’ dialogue, will take place at the ANEW Hotel Parktonian in Braamfontein, on Thursday, 29 August 2024, from 09h00.

The announcement will highlight key areas of progress in Gauteng, providing a deeper understanding of HIV prevalence and the factors driving the HIV epidemic. These valuable insights will inform and guide HIV programme planning and implementation at the provincial level.

The report further presents strategic information crucial for government officials, policymakers, researchers, programme implementers, and other stakeholders. It supports initiatives undertaken by the country to advance HIV management and achieve the 95–95–95 UNAIDS Fast-Track targets. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for stakeholders to engage with and discuss the current state of the HIV epidemic.

The survey seeks to maintain surveillance of HIV infection and behaviour in South Africa and to obtain a better understanding of factors driving the HIV epidemic.

The HSRC conducted the survey in partnership with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).
