HSRC executive appointed to National Planning Commission

Dr Miriam Altman, executive director of the HSRC’s Centre for Poverty, Employment and Growth, has been appointed as a commissioner to the National Planning Commission (NPC).

President Jacob Zuma announced the names of the members of the National Planning Commission (NPC), which is tasked with producing a national development plan and development vision statement for the country.

Chaired by Trevor Manuel, the National Planning Minister in The Presidency, this new initiative of government will be responsible for developing a draft long term vision and strategic plan for South Africa. The Commission will also advise on cross-cutting issues that impact on the country’s long term development.

Mr Zuma said the NPC,  will produce reports on a range of issues such as water security, climate change, food security, energy security, infrastructure planning, human resource development, defence and security matters, the structure of the economy, spatial planning, demographic trends and others.
