The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), in collaboration with the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), will on Wednesday 18 September 2024, virtually launch a ground-breaking report and key findings from the first nationally representative survey on public perceptions of climate change and the Just Transition in South Africa. This nationally representative study was conducted by the Human Science Research Council on 3500 respondents aged 16 years and older, in households across all nine provinces in South Africa.

The report explores, amongst other issues, public awareness of climate change and a just transition, experiences with extreme weather and how this impacts views on climate change, views on transitioning from coal to renewables, and support for policies ensuring a fair and inclusive energy shift.

The virtual launch will receive an overview of the HSRC survey presented by the Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Sarah Mosoetsa, and reflections on key findings from PCC Commissioner Mapaseka Lukhele and other stakeholders such as NUMSA, SATAWU, and Youth.

This launch dialogue aims to reflect on the implications of the findings for key stakeholder groups, and present recommendations based on the findings. The panelists will examine opinions on support for climate policies, perceptions of responsibility, and familiarity with the concept of Just Transition and provide critical insights and actionable recommendations for various stakeholders.
