The world marks World TB Day annually on the 24th of March. World TB Day is designed to build public awareness that TB remains an epidemic causing significant morbidity and mortality in much of the world including South Africa.
South Africa appears in all three of the recently published lists of high TB burden countries: the 30 high TB burden countries, the 30 high HIV/TB burden countries and the 30 high multidrug resistant TB (MDR TB) burden countries. The high levels of TB prevalence, incidence and mortality in the country have a significant impact on many South Africans. Drawing on data from the literature, various projects and experiences around the country, this seminar will reflect on TB in South Africa and will discuss anticipated progress in addressing the epidemic over the next few years and also discuss social and structural factors impacting on and linked to TB.
The HSRC seminar series is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of DST.
