The programme is available for download below:

Date: 9 November 2017
Time:
  12h15 – 14h00
Venues: Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town

The purpose of the seminar is to discuss the value of and need for urban growth, as well as best possible ways to facilitate value adding and cost-effective modelling in South African metropolitan areas. The value of urban modelling in support of complex and integrated decision-making in fast growing cities and the capability to develop and utilise such models, have been well established in many cities across the world. Given the unique modelling context (data, development and policy environments) of each city, unique approaches are required in different contexts and especially so in developing countries.

The seminar is hosted by the Urban Modelling team of the CSIR, which aims to explore the question by reflecting on the initiative to establish such capacity in South Africa. The focus will be placed on recent urban growth modelling experiences in collaboration with the Metropolitan Municipalities of Nelson Mandela Bay, Ekurhuleni and the City of Tshwane.

Urban growth models and city specific platforms making use of the UrbanSim application, have been developed, tested and over recent years applied in support of planning and decision-making in the three metros in different ways. The development and application experience provide rich learning for continued exploration in the field of urban growth modelling, public investment decision-support, and integrated urban and transport planning in urban areas.
