17 July 2013
12:15 - 14:00

Date: 17 July 2013

Time: 12:15 – 14:00

Presenters: Gregory Houston (HSRC), Shepi Mati (Independent Researcher),Babalo Mdikane (National Heritage Council) and Dineo Seabe (HSRC)

The South African National Heritage Council (NHC) identified the development and management of the legacy of the liberation struggle as an important aspect of heritage preservation in the country, and initiated the Liberation Heritage Route (LHR) project as one of the initiatives in this regard. The LHR is intended to consist of a network of heritage sites, some nodes with world heritage status, others with national, provincial and local significance, that recognise people, communities, icons, places/sites and record epoch-making stories and events which had a significant impact on the South African anti-colonial struggle and struggle for liberation. The NHC has commissioned the HSRC to conduct research for the LHR project, and part of the research process is to engage with relevant stakeholders, communities, individuals, heritage practitioners and academics to review the research approach, some research results, and preliminary lists of heritage sites. This seminar will focus on the Western Cape, and the discussion will centre on the key events and processes, communities and organisations, and structures and individuals that lie at the centre of the research on the liberation struggle in the province, as well as potential liberation heritage sites and prominent individuals around which heritage sites can be developed.
