The HSRC flagship projects on poverty and inequality Better lives in troubling times: A focus on wellbeing, governance and city regions

04 September 2018
12:30 - 14:00

The HSRC is undertaking three priority research projects on poverty and inequality:

Multidimensional wellbeing in a racialised but changing society
The multiple dimensions of poverty and equality have far-reaching consequences for the wellbeing of South Africa’s people. This study moves beyond material and economic, and subjective, wellbeing approaches to their conceptualisation and measurement. It explores collective, relational or social wellbeing – how people engage with each other, and their social structures, in order to enhance their wellbeing. This reorientation helps answer critical questions, such as how social relations in unequal societies might be employed to  improve people’s lives.

Governing for social justice
Continued poverty, inequality and exclusion have led many to doubt the adequacy and legitimacy of South Africa’s Constitution, and its ability to realise  socioeconomic  transformation.  Building  on  previous  research,  this  study  encourages  a  multi-stakeholder  process to assemble evidence to help define a minimum core content for socioeconomic rights, and a Transformative Governance Index (TGI)  to monitor progress towards dignity and equality.

City-Regions as drivers of inclusive development
Cities are engines of prosperity but also drivers of exclusion and inequality. What are the factors inhibiting inclusive growth, and what can be done to mitigate them? Urban land has become a major flashpoint. Yet the land market is critical to promoting dense, liveable and productive cities. How can urban land policies ensure affordable housing while protecting property rights and encouraging investment and growth?
