The Role of the State analyses the relationship between the state and the development of the national systems of innovation of the BRICS. Combining original data and expert analysis, the book presents experience and knowledge that may enhance our understanding of the theory of innovation systems, and the implementation of policies and strategies for their development.  This is the first volume in a series of five books bringing together the results of intensive research on the national systems of innovation in the BRICS.

This presentation builds up on the findings of this book to examine the role of the BRICS group in the global economic order and the placement of the South African national system of innovation within the BRICS.
