The HSRC seminar series is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of DST.

In anticipation of Women’s Day, this seminar brings together diverse contributions from activist and academic perspectives to reflect on the status of sexual and gender rights in South Africa. For many, gender equality remains contested against a backdrop of continued sexual-and gender-based violence, the burden of insecure employment and poverty on women, the impact of HIV and AIDS, and the inequitable distribution of caregiving. Further to this, inequality comes to bear in particular ways on the lives of women who exist at the intersections of markers such as race, class, sexuality, ability and rurality. In this seminar, discussants explore critical issues, such as:

  • The current context of knowledge production around sexuality and gender as it pertains to activism, research, and policy development
  • Social science responses to advancing  full citizenship and belonging for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons
  • Problematising normative notions of gender and sexuality and working toward achieving gender justice in social and political contexts

Join us in a stimulating discussion that celebrates the richness and depth of current research and advocacy around sexual and gender rights.

The seminar may be attended in Pretoria, Cape Town or Durban
