This City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) economic overview presents a review of the state of the city’s economy as at August 2013, updated for selected variables. The findings are based on a critical review of published literature from Statistics South Africa, CoJ, Global Insight and other sources.
The study was conducted by the Economic Performance and Development (EPD) Research Unit of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). This was in response to a request by the City for a study on the impacts of rates and tariffs on households and businesses in CoJ. The main objective of the study was to present the state of the CoJ’s economy as well as review of other key indicators for policy guidance.
The study covered the following areas: the state of CoJ economy; CoJ demographic profile and human development; employment conditions; service delivery; household income and expenditures; tourism; and the state of crime in CoJ. The study focused on the city’s regional dynamics by analysing the above indicators for all the seven administrative regions. The findings show the importance of the city’s economy in both the provincial, the South African and global economies, and how they are interrelated with other South African metropolitan municipalities.
