The ANC Election Manifesto: ANC Women’s Agenda: what this means for the 2014 Elections

23 April 2014
12:30 - 13:30

2014 ELECTION MANIFESTO SEMINARS

Speaker: Thoko Didiza, African National Congress (ANC) NEC member and Project Consultant for the Archie Mafeje Research Institute at the University of South Africa, former Minister of Agriculture and Public Works.
Date: 23 April 2014
Time: 12H15 for 12h30  – 13H30

In reflecting on the debates that have taken place so far on the upcoming elections, Thoko Didiza will address the role of women in South African politics over the past 20 years. In 1994 South African women handed over the Women’s Charter to the first Speaker of Parliament, which outlined what women wanted to see in a post-apartheid democratic South Africa. This was a collective effort by women from diverse backgrounds and political persuasions. These same women fought for the inclusion of the equality clause (section 9) in the Constitution of our country. As women comprise more than fifty per cent of the voting population, the focus of the seminar will be on examining this empowering journey since 1994, and outlining what ANC election manifesto says about the women’s agenda.

A recording of today’s seminar can be viewed on the HSRC’s YouTube channel at: http://youtu.be/2oImxJCsbMo
