The use of formative assessment, aptly known as assessment for learning, is recognised as important in enhancing teaching and learning. Yet, this form of assessment is rarely used in South African classrooms due to a measurement driven approach to learner assessment. Assessment for learning occurs when teacher and learner interactions provide information that the teacher uses to modify teaching to meet learning goals. South African studies reveal that teachers need support and appropriate resources to engage in this kind of assessment.
 
This seminar introduces an innovative online assessment system for teachers and learners called, the Teacher Assessment Resource for Monitoring and Improving Instruction (TARMII) and reports on the findings of a pilot study conducted on its use in selected primary schools. The TARMII system enables teachers to assess for learning in that it allows teachers to collect information on learner assessments, analyse the information and provide reports on learner performance. This information is then used to plan and modify teaching to improve both teaching and learning. We conclude that the TARMII system has potential to transform the way assessment is conceived and used in South African classrooms.
