This seminar launches the book Studying while black  – an intimate portrait of the many ways in which students in South Africa experience university, and the centrality of race and geography in their quest for education and ultimately acceptance. The book is the outcome of a longitudinal study conducted between 2013 and 2017 that tracked 80 students from 8 diverse universities in South African and documented their experiences. Join us as we discuss fresh insights into the transformation struggles within universities. A 45-minute documentary accompanies this study entitled Ready or not! Black students’ experiences of South African universities which we will show a part of. The full documentary is available at:

The HSRC seminar series is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of the DST.
