Dr Saahier Parker is a Research Specialist at the Centre for Science Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) unit of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). He has more than a decade experience in running large, national STI surveys and has published extensively within the field. Dr Parker attained a PhD in Science and Technology studies from the University of Stellenbosch, developing new STI measurement indicators.
Dr. Ekaterina Streltsova is a senior research fellow of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow, Russia). She holds a PhD in Sociology and has been involved into the numerous research projects of ISSEK HSE in the field of STI measurement. She is a member of the expert group responsible for the assessment and upgrade of the STI statistics in Russia.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) remain vitally important at driving inclusive development and economic growth. This is more important within emerging economies that have a long technological catch-up process in order to meaningfully compete globally. Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) have been identified as the key success factors in navigating many of those developmental challenges. How do we measure national performance in ways that remain locally relevant and internationally comparable?
Coinciding with the 10th annual BRICs summit, this seminar presents lessons from the R&D surveys in Russia and South Africa, as well as discuss some unique characteristics within each system of innovation. Topics will include standardised methodologies, organization of data and recent survey results. This exchange hopes to highlight areas of common interest and comparison as well as sharing experience and developing solutions to emerging issues and challenges experienced in initiating surveys of this nature in both Russia and South Africa.
