Producing Concepts, Theory and Key Texts: Youth Studies for/from the Global South

13 December 2018
12:30 - 14:00

Date:  Thursday,  13 December 2018
Time:  12:30 – 14:00
Venues: Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and PE | livestream by Vidyo

Speakers:
Prof Sharlene Swartz and Dr Adam Cooper, HSRC

In this seminar Prof Sharlene Swartz and Dr Adam Cooper, co-editors of the forthcoming Oxford University Press Handbook of Global South Youth Studies (to be published in 2020), interrogate and unpack the concept of Global South Youth Studies. Associated concepts like decolonised curricula, liberatory research and the production of theory and knowledge will also be discussed. The speakers will address what is at stake in these debates, what it means to produce theory for the South and the danger of simply reproducing theory from Europe and North America and adding local examples.

Adam Cooper will talk about some tools that can be used to tackle a field like Global South youth studies and the difficulties involved in showing how real, historically produced geographical differences shape the lives of young people, without becoming trapped in false binaries like North versus South. Following this, Sharlene Swartz will share some thoughts on what decolonizing a curriculum entails, before looking at the concepts that structure the Handbook, terms like navigational capacities, ontological insecurity and systemic violences.

These speakers will be in conversation with Kieran Odhav and Prof Mokong Mapadimeng, two editors of the Handbook of the Sociology of Youth in BRICS countries, exploring how these texts are both similar and different and the importance of such publications.

This seminar is co-funded by a National Research Foundation Knowledge Interchange and Collaboration grant and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of the DST.
