On the 12 January 2015 the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) published the Draft National Youth Policy for 2014-19 and invited comments as follows:

This is a draft youth policy. The nation; young people in particular, are requested to give their opinion, suggestions and to rewrite sections of the draft policy or even the entire draft policy whether individually or as organized groups. While innovation is welcome, the suggestions must be practical and realistic within the context of shrinking budgets and the overarching mandate of the South African Constitution’s vision of a prosperous, democratic, non-sexist, non-racist and equal society and the NDP’s vision of an egalitarian and prosperous society by 2030.

The HSRC invites you in partnership with the Children’s Institute, Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit and the Poverty and Inequality Initiative at the University of Cape Town to a working lunch in order for us to draft a formal response as a collective of academics and practitioners.  We will have four very brief inputs followed by discussion and recorded recommendations.

Prof. Sharlene Swartz and Prof. Monde Makiwane from the HSRC will lead a discussion on the dreams and vision we have for young people in South Africa, while Dr Ariane DeLannoy and Dr Cecil Mlatsheni from UCT will offer initial critiques of the policy as it currently stands in order to frame our thinking and help us think through the effect of this policy on South Africa’s development in general, and youth outcomes in particular.

In preparation, all participants are invited to read the draft policy and come ready to contribute both verbal and written submissions.

The seminar may be attended in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban
