Mathematics and science performance in South Africa:

27 March 2018
12:30 - 13:30

Presenter: Dr Vijay Reddy and the TIMSS team

South African learners perform poorly by both local and international standards. In an effort to improve the health of the education system, proper diagnoses of the factors that facilitate and hinder educational achievement is needed. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Studies (TIMSS) data offers us an opportunity to do so by collecting both learner assessment data as well as contextual information from learners, teachers, parents and school principals. TIMSS 2015 was led by a team of researchers in the Education and Skills Development research programme at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). Two national reports presenting the findings of the two studies have been published by the HSRC Press and provide some perspective on how international studies can be used to provide meaningful national insights (www.timss-sa.org.za). The analyses provided describe in detail the current picture of achievement for learners in the country, highlighting key individual, family, school and provincial dynamics and its influence on achievement. The key findings from these reports are presented in this seminar presentation.
